Podesta: Trump ‘first draft dodger’ in war to protect democracy

Former Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta said Sunday that President Trump is “the first draft-dodger” in what he described as an information war.

“But I think what the real issue is, is how he’s reacted to that,”Podesta told CBS’s “Face the Nation,” referring to how Trump has responded to Russia’s attempts to meddle in the 2016 election.

“And in that context, if we’re – if this is information warfare, then I think he’s the first draft-dodger in the war,” he continued.

Podesta said Trump has tried to “undermine” special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s attempts to meddle in the election and any potential ties between Trump campaign staff members and Moscow.

“We learned this week, he’s ordered no effort to try to get the intelligence community to get together to try to prevent further activities in the 2018 election,” Podesta said.

The former Clinton campaign chairman said Trump has “failed” in protecting American democracy.

Trump greeted Mueller’s indictment last week of multiple Russians accused of attempted election interference as a success.

“[I]t is more important than ever before to come together as Americans,” Trump said Friday in a statement addressing the latest developments in Mueller’s investigation. “We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful. It’s time we stop the outlandish partisan attacks, wild and false allegations, and far-fetched theories, which only serve to further the agendas of bad actors, like Russia, and do nothing to protect the principles of our institutions. We must unite as Americans to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections.”
