Colbert mocks Trump’s school shooting claim: ‘‘We already know how you react to combat situations’

Late-night host Stephen Colbert mocked President Trump over his comment that he would have run into a high school to save students from a gunman, saying that the president’s track record with “combat situations” doesn’t support his claim.

“There’s a lot in there that I doubt, but the part I really don’t believe is that he can run,” Colbert said on his CBS show, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“Sir, we already know how you react to combat situations,” he added. “You got five deferments from Vietnam. What are you going to do? Run in there and stab him with your bone spurs?”

Trump said at a meeting of governors at the White House on Monday that he would have likely rushed into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School – even unarmed – to save students from a gunman who opened fire on the South Florida campus earlier this month.

“You don’t know until you test it, but I think, I really believe I’d run in there, even if I didn’t have a weapon, and I think most of the people in this room would have done that too,” Trump said.

The attack left 17 people dead and 14 others injured. The accused gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, has been charged with premeditated murder.

The shooting reignited the national debate over the country’s gun control laws, and has put pressure on Trump and other politicians to take action.

The president in recent days has floated the idea of arming trained teachers and doing away with gun-free zones on school campuses.

Trump received five deferments from military service in Vietnam in the 1960s – four, because he was enrolled in college at the time, and a fifth after he graduated, because of a diagnosis of bone spurs.
